Villa Castiglione, among the most beautiful villas in Capri, has a new owner: Amelia Grimaldi. From the Greek temple to the Roman villa of delight, from the Angevin castle to today’s splendid contemporary residence: few residences in the world can boast the history of this property. A place where the past, nature and beauty meet to offer an exclusive and decidedly unique experience.

Who bought Villa Castiglione in Capri: who is the owner Amelia Grimaldi

Amelia Grimaldi, one of four sibling partners in the prestigious Grimaldi shipowning group, is the new owner of Villa Castiglione, the famous luxury mansion located on the promontory of Via Castello in Capri. She succeeded in winning the property through auction in the amount of just over 18 million euros. The mansion had been for sale for a number of years, and after a series of unsuccessful court auctions it was awarded last July 23.

From 2012 to 2021 Amelia Grimaldi served on the board of theUniversity of Naples Parthenope. Since its establishment in 2007, he has been a member of the board of the Grimaldi Onlus Foundation engaged in social solidarity actions. The Grimaldi family has strong ties to the azure isle and has been aiming for one of Capri’s most prestigious properties for years.

After the auction of the prestigious property the fear was that the mansion, a former military fort, would end up in the hands of some foreign fund or worse to some speculator. But this was not the case. The sale is a post-Law 80 real estate execution, that is, after a forced expropriation. The auction without auction of the only lot was held at the Court of Naples, with bids starting at about 22 million euros, for a base price of 29.5 million, and minimum raise in case of bidding of 200 thousand euros.

The buyer was awarded full and complete ownership of the villa, developing between the basement and ground floor, five bedrooms and six bathrooms, a large double living room, a sitting room and in the basement of rooms for domestic staff, as well as the kitchen in typical Italian style, as well as storage areas and cellar. The villa covers over 750 square meters of indoor space and over 500 square meters of outdoor areas with terrace, sunbathing area, pool area and tree-lined gardens.

The story of Villa Castiglione on Capri

Villa Castiglione has two thousand years of history behind it. A Greek temple was initially built on Mount Castiglione, then Emperor Tiberius made it a fortress, then in medieval times it became a fortified castle with the addition of walls and battlements. More recently, in 1955, Prince Roberto Caraccciolo of San Vito arranged interventions on the property, transforming it into a villa that was later taken over by the American industrialist Gerber, who then sold it to the Venezuelan financier De Mase, a close friend of then-President of the Republic Giovanni Leone.

It was then put up for sale for 40 million euros. In the meantime, it was entrusted to the owner of the Punta Tragara hotel, who has continued to manage the mansion without tarnishing its image and keeping its reputation and profitability high. And remaining a dream residence, awarded in 2014 by the readers of the Wall street Journal as a the home most beautiful in Europe.
