Once upon a time, to be cyclical was the fashion: trends burst onto the market, lasted the time of a season, and then were put away in a drawer. Well stored because, sooner or later, they would return. Today, the same trend seems to concern the world of design. Just think of wallpapers, which, in vogue in the 1970s, are now back in an artistic and modern guise. Wallpapers, they are called today. Or wallpapers. But there is also another element typical of the homes of the last century that is suffering the same fate: it is the partition, o screen whatever.
The history of the separé
The screen came into being, in an obviously rudimentary way, more than 2,000 years ago. But it is only in the China of 200 BC. which spread widely, becoming a true design complement: at the time, items with mythological, natural, or depicting scenes of palace life were especially fashionable. The idea was to offer some privacy in the most luxurious rooms, which, of course, tended to be very large and without partitions. Within a short time, it became a must-have throughout the Eastern world.
But let us come to more recent times: after experiencing great success in the late Middle Ages, the partition came back into vogue in Europe during the 1700s, mainly as a decorative object to be kept in the home. It was mainly the French to appreciate this trend, as evidenced by the genuine passion of Coco Chanel-who had a rich collection of them. Created for very practical purposes (to fend off drafts of air), partitions later began to be employed, in the classical era, to allow ladies to dress in privacy. What about today? Let’s find out How to use the partition to add a touch of class to our home.
How to use the partition in every room
The room divider becomes once again a furniture trend because, increasingly, today’s homes boast beautiful open spaces where, inevitably, it is difficult to find the right privacy. Here, therefore, the screen becomes essential to separate the different functions of a room, but also to conceal elements that one prefers to keep more hidden. They are treated in the same way as fake doors, or fake walls, but-unlike them-they have an extra edge: they do not stop the light, and for today’s homes, brightness is everything. Of course, any room can be enhanced by a room divider. Here’s how to do it.
The partition at the entrance
Many houses, nowadays, no longer have a real entrance: you enter directly into the living room, and if this offers great brightness, at the same time there is a shortage of privacy. A small room divider, perhaps made of bamboo, allows you to hide from view the coat rack and shoe rack, two essential elements for organizing the access corner of your home. If, on the other hand, you prefer to make this small space a little larger, you could opt for a mirrored wall screen: in addition to reflecting light, it is great for taking a last look at yourself before going out.
The partition in the living room
In the living room, the room divider can find so many different functions, becoming a real piece of furniture. By choosing a model with neutral hues and modern lines, with a dark but not too opaque fabric, you can separate the conversation area from the relaxation corner, or even the actual living room from the dining area. The important thing is not to create a barrier against natural light: for this reason, in addition to light fabric models, perforated and decorative partitions are suitable, or, if you like the genre, those made with plants, real mobile green walls.
The partition in the kitchen
A slightly more unusual choice is to arrange a partition to divide the dining area from the one dedicated to the living room. A wooden screen is ideal for keeping the corner where the table is placed separate, so as to provide more privacy for the living room. Also excellent is a bookcase, voluminous and important (even better if sky-ground): instead of being leaning against the wall, it can be used in the middle of the room, behind the sofa, to divide the room. Finally, if you need to separate the kitchen from the rest of the open space, a wonderful idea consists of a screen created with old salvaged stained glass windows, or with opaque glass with iron edges for an industrial effect that’s so New York lofty.
The partition in the bedroom
Also the bedroom can be embellished with a screen, preferring in this case softer colors and soft textures. If you have an en-suite bathroom, the partition is a great idea to replace the door-a decidedly design-friendly choice. Alternatively, it can be an ideal piece of furniture to act as a screen for the walk-in closet or the corner dedicated to the dressing table, or even to give the bed a romantic aura. Space, as we anticipated, for the soft earth-sky fabrics in pastel shades, for a relaxing atmosphere.
The partition in the bathroom
Who said that in bathroom Can’t a beautiful partition find its place? Better, of course, to opt for a wooden or bamboo cane model, which is more resistant to moisture and can give the room an exotic air as well as a sense of lightness. You can also choose a multitasking model, such as storage furniture with a mirrored wall designed to be placed in the center of the room. The screen can here find the function of dividing the area dedicated to the toilet., creating an unpretentious ante-bathroom. In many homes, it is also not possible to have a separate space for the laundry room: in this case, the washer and dryer can remain sheltered from view, giving more harmony to the room.
After all, the beauty of partitions is just that: cheap and easy to install, they can be changed often. And in turn change the face of a room, according to our taste and needs of the moment.
