Undoubtedly, it is characterized by a romantic and vintage atmosphere-it is perfect for all dreamers! – and to prefer a certain type of furniture, which presents a lived-in air. Appearances, however, are deceiving: we are often talking about very high quality furniture, or furniture restored with the specific intention of aiming for an aged effect that is as authentic as possible. A trend that started in the 1980s and is beloved today: what is Shabby Chic style and what are its characteristics, including colors and materials.
What is the Shabby Chic style
The term Shabby Chic is now ubiquitous in the pages of furniture magazines. Let’s start with the meaning of the term: in fact, we can translate it as “scruffy elegant,” and it is a style that is only seemingly neglected, as it requires a great deal of attention to detail. Born in Great Britain, in effect evoking the decorations and furnishings of the English country houses, but these are not the only influences, as it takes its cues from the Swedish painted decorations which date back to the 18th century. For the first time, this term was used in the 1980 From the British furniture magazine The World of Interiors.
Since then, it has become a huge reference point for so many people and, in particular, has spread first to the United States. At that time, Shabby Chic was contrasted with a more luxurious, opulent style that had become well established. And today? By now, it is among the trendy and benchmark styles for those who appreciate a touch of romance in their environments, without sacrificing that lived-in look that can take us, almost, back in time.
The characteristics of the Shabby Chic style
There are many elements that should not be underestimated the moment we wish to furnish in the Shabby Chic style. To transform and revolutionize their environments, we must not forget to follow the directions of interior designers, from the color palette up to the use of certain materials. And, also, maximum freedom with the creative recycling, as we can make many details with which to enrich any room… in Shabby style, of course!
Colors
Let’s start with the colors, the shades, which must be strictly lived-in. If there is one definitely interesting aspect of this style, it is that it teaches us to aim for harmony. Shabbare a room means, therefore, to dwell on the pairings, of course, but also on the contrasts. Hues and shades must be strictly clear, perhaps opting for the pastel colors, capable of giving thatdusty effect, but natural. The furniture looks almost “worn out,” but not at all.
In this regard, in addition to buying the Shabby Chic style furniture, we can put ourselves to the test by opting for opaque and chalky paints. The reference colors are ivory, light gray or pearl gray, white, beige, powder pink, and lavender purple. An important little tip: It is the colors that must stand out, including on fabrics and upholstery. With a well-thought-out color palette, in any case, we will have no difficulty in create a bright room, which is romantic, cozy and even more spacious visually (the “power” of light colors).
Materials and fabrics
What are the dominant materials of the Shabby Chic style? Many, starting with wood: more generally, remember that materials must necessarily be natural, so yes to wrought iron, cotton and linen fabrics. Also the prints play their part, as wallpapers at flowers o wood effect.
We complete every room in the house with lace or embroidery details: pillows on the sofa and bed serve to create a space that invites relaxation. In addition to floral prints, those are definitely indicated. geometric or a lines. What about the curtains? As anticipated, they should be made of linen or cotton, to look very floaty. A light effect that does not weigh down the room, but, on the contrary, contributes to the elegance of the fixtures.
Furniture complements and decorations
No less important are the furnishings complements. In that case pickled wood objects e wrought iron, colorful pillows, shelves e ornaments that evoke country style-these are just a few of the additions that can definitely come in handy to give any room a soul and feel.
And let’s not forget the details, because these are what make the house truly lived-in, like a frame made of seashells, a wooden jewelry box, a candle holder for the dining room table. Lace, lace and ruffles, then, are inevitable: they grant more charm.
The philosophy of recovery
The recycling o creative recovery, or the art of transforming and reusing worn objects, is the basis of the Shabby Chic style, which teaches us the importance of enhance what we already have in our homes. No, it is not a pro-consumerism style; rather, it is a concrete way to salvage an old metal jug that can become a flowerpot, or an old closet, not before repainting it. And that is how you get that vintage effect that is so loved by people, because it takes them back to “our grandmothers’ houses,” where every object has its own story. A priceless value.
Flowers and plants
The Shabby Chic style does not focus exclusively on the flowers and to the plants like the Urban Jungle style, but definitely are essential to give a more cozy and romantic identity to any room. A bouquet of fresh flowers, then, always makes a difference: colors and scents that make us feel in the midst of nature, but in the comfort of our home. Again, however, the secret is to go for delicate shades, such as camellias, roses and lavender. And if we want to further increase the charm of the rooms, let’s not forget to buy some candles To decorate.
Hydrangeas are also definitely suitable for decorating in the shabby style: pastel shades, after all, best describe the palette. They are purely feminine flowers that do not require a direct position in the sun and, therefore, fit beautifully in our interiors. And the roses? Antique ones: nostalgic and refined, they can only marry well with Shabby dictates.
