Many modern homes possess a anti-bathroom, i.e., that small room that introduces the actual bathroom: this is not only a choice of style, but – in particular cases – a real bureaucratic obligation from which one cannot exempt oneself. In the latter case, no use despairing. Perhaps you preferred to have a larger bathroom, but now you find yourself with this unused corner and it is good to make the most of it. How to do it? There are plenty of ingenious ideas that will help you to gain space and to create a truly original (as well as very useful) room. Let’s find out some of them.

When and why the anti-bathroom is mandatory

The anti-bathroom originated as a service area, which divides the room in which the bathroom fixtures are located from the rest of the house. Therefore, one can understand its usefulness, especially under certain conditions. This is precisely why Italian law makes it mandatory (in modern houses and those that are being renovated) to provide this corner, In the case where the bathroom gives onto a room in the living area. That is: if the bathroom has its entrance in the living room or kitchen, there must be at least two doors separating it from the main room – that of the bathroom itself and that of the ante-bathroom.

This is a regulation aimed at complying with the basic standards of hygiene: for this reason, the ante-bathroom is not mandatory if the bathroom opens onto a hallway or into the sleeping area. Regarding size, there are also strict rules to be followed. The room must measure at least 1 x 1.2 meters, while for the height there are no special provisions. Finally, it is not mandatory that the ante-bathroom have a window (unless a boiler or water heater is located there). However, it is essential that a ventilation or exhaust system be installed to avoid moisture problems.

How to make the most of the ante-bathroom

We have seen that the anti-bathroom can be a legal requirement, which is why in some cases you just can not be exempt from making it. So why not make the best use of it by making a useful corner for your home? If you have an ante-bathroom to furnish, know that you can really indulge yourself: from a very convenient laundry room to a small study, or – why not? – to an additional wardrobe. A few simple ideas can help you make an anti-bathroom that will not only be stylish, but also valuable for your daily needs.

Anteroom in the living area

The most common situation, given legal obligations, is to have a ante-bathroom in the living area: Since the bathroom cannot open into the living room or kitchen, you will have to deal with this additional space. No fear, there are really so many ideas to make the most of it. Let’s see some of them.

A small bathroom

The legal requirement concerns the bathroom, or more precisely the room in which the toilets are located. Nothing prevents you, therefore, from making in the ante-bathroom a small corner where you can place the washbasin and mirror, so as to reclaim space in the actual bathroom (which often remains quite small). You are spoiled for choice when it comes to wall coverings: from tiles that match or contrast with those in the bathroom to wallpaper-nowadays there is even waterproof wallpaper, perfect for damp environments. And don’t forget a elegant laundry basket!

A spacious laundry room

Speaking of dirty laundry, have you always dreamed of a room dedicated solely to laundry? Your wish is soon granted: the anteroom, if equipped with the right drains, can safely accommodate the washer and dryer. If space permits, equip the room with all amenities. Put in a cabinet or cabinets for detergents, an ironing board (even folding) and a deep washstand-very useful, for example, for filling a bucket of water or washing a few clothes by hand. Is the ante-bathroom too small? All you need to do is. stack the appliances and perhaps hide them in one of the special cabinets that are easily found in furniture stores.

A hobby/relaxation area

The anteroom can become your relaxation corner, a peaceful oasis where you can retreat to after a long day’s work. If you love reading, add a couple of bookshelves, a comfortable armchair and a floor lamp, perhaps finding space for a small table where you can arrange a cup of hot tea to sip on winter evenings. If, on the other hand, you have a hobby that require you some space-such as model making, sewing, or decoupage-you can set up a large desk and a multipurpose cabinet where you can organize your work materials.

A large storage room

There is never enough space, so you can use the anteroom as a simple storage room. You will only need capacious closets or some exposed shelving, if not even more elegant shelves. What to store there? Anything you want: from linens for the bathroom to cleaning supplies, from water or drink crates to canned goods for the kitchen, via the vacuum cleaner, broom and bucket-as well as all the other tools used for the household chores.

Anti-bathroom in the sleeping area

If – for convenience or because you bought your home already so organized – you have an ante-bathroom that precedes the bathroom in the sleeping area, you can use it in an alternative way to gain some space. In this case, it will be much more useful to furnish it as pertaining to your bedroom, given its proximity. Here are a couple of interesting ideas.

A very useful wardrobe

Have you ever thought about a walk-in closet? If you do not have sufficient space in the bedroom, you can make it in the ante-bathroom. If the space tends to be damp, better to arrange some closets where you can organize your clothes: In this case, ideally, you should use the room only for the change of seasons, putting the clothes inside special bags or containers so as to prevent the formation of mold. Conversely, if the room is very dry, you can arrange some racks and shelves where you can display your clothes so that you always have everything in sight.

A small studio

Finally, why not derive a small study from the anteroom? Organize the room by arranging a desk with a desk lamp, a convenient chest of drawers and some shelving or bookcases where you can put your readings or important documents. Don’t forget a few shelves, to display some decorations to liven up the room: some framed photos or a few small plants to give a special touch to your anteroom and make the atmosphere more relaxing.
