The one thing you need to make money from your blog (1)

Bloggers often ask me how to make money from their blogs.

“I started my blog last week,” they write. “Is it too early to put Google Adsense into my sidebars?”

I’ll admit it: This makes me cringe.

Putting ads up before you have an audience is like going up to someone at a party and trying to sell them something before you even know their name.

Yes, you can make money from your blog. But it’s not a get rich quick thing. You need to have one thing in place before you make money. And that thing takes time and dedication.

I’ll get to the one thing in a minute. But first, a story.

One of my blogging BFFs is Amanda.

She writes about Gluten Free living in Miami.

I first met her when she joined my Facebook group, Blogging on Your Own Terms. I had written a post that I was offering free 15 minute consultations, and she responded, saying that she was interested.

Since she lives in Miami, I suggested that we meet up.

We went to Panther Coffee, one of my favorite coffee shops in Miami, and I helped her with her blog. A few days later, she signed up for my blogging membership site, Have Your Cupcake.

Another story…

My blogging mentor, Sue, reached out to me after reading a bunch of my blog posts she found on Pinterest. (Check out her blog here.)

I was offering a beta content coaching program, and she jumped on it. I helped her with her content, and she helped me learn how to get more traffic to my blog.

Now we chat on a regular basis, and are in a blogging Mastermind group together.

What was the main point of these 2 stories?

First of all, that Sue and Amanda ROCK.

And secondly, that blogging is no different from any other avenue for making money – it’s all about building relationships.

The ONE THING you need to make money from your blog is to build relationships with people.

You may have heard the old saying that people buy from people they know, like and trust. Well, your blog is an avenue for getting people to know, like and trust you.

The 5 steps to building relationships (and making money) with your blog:

Step 1: Writing posts that your audience cares about.
Step 2: Getting traffic.
Step 3: Offering irresistible email freebies.
Step 4: Building relationships through email.
Step 5: Making an offer.

Want some examples?

Example 1: Using your blog to sell your products and services

Steps 1&2: Writing posts that your audience cares about & getting traffic.

Let’s say you want to sell your life coaching services. Someone who needs life coaching is browsing on Pinterest when she finds a blog post you wrote on letting go of negative self talk. As she reads down the page, she thinks, “Yes! This is exactly what I needed to read right now!”

She clicks around to see if you have another article on the same topic. And, amazingly, you do! She devours that article as well.

Step 2: Offering irresistible email freebies.
Then she signs up for your email list to get your checklist on 10 ways to let go of negative self talk.

Step 3: Building relationships through email.
For the next 2 weeks, you send her regular emails on topics that she cares about, offer her more freebies, and tell her more about yourself.

Step 4: Making an offer.

Finally, you offer an initial coaching call.

She feels like she already knows you, so she signs up immediately.

Example 2: Using your blog to sell affiliate products

Pretend you are a homeschool mom who writes about homeschooling creatively. Your goal is to sell a math curriculum you love.

Steps 1&2: Writing posts that your audience cares about & getting traffic.

You meet another homeschool in a Facebook group, where she is asking about how to teach multiplication facts to her daughter. You give her a link to your series on how to teach multiplication using the curriculum you are selling. She has been shopping around for different curricula and isn’t sure what to use, but she loves your ideas.

Step 2: Offering irresistible email freebies.

She immediately signs up for your email list to get a printable lesson plan that you created, based loosely on the math curriculum.

Step 3: Building relationships through email.

Over the next week, you send her 5 more lesson extensions, along with little hints about how awesome the curriculum is.

Step 4: Making your offer.

In each email, you include an affiliate link to the curriculum. By the end of the week, she is so engaged in the lessons you’ve sent that she eagerly signs up.

The one thing you need to make money from your blog

Do you see how, in each of these scenarios, building the relationship is what created the monetization opportunity?

It’s the same for sponsored posts. In order to get sponsored post gigs, you need lots of traffic. How do you get people to keep coming back? By writing content they care about, furthering the relationship through email, and then letting them know when you’ve written a new post.

I know how tempting it is to want to make money from your blog RIGHT NOW.

But building relationships takes time.

You need to learn what your audience really cares about.

You need to write posts that make people say YES! She gets me!

You need to deepen the relationship by offering freebies that actually help people.

And you need to put time and effort into creating value with your emails.

That’s how to create true fans. And that’s how to make money from your blog.
